The Oh Team

Deb France founded Oh planning+design in 2004 as a full service architectural firm with unique qualifications in health care, higher education, master planning, programming and public buildings. Our name represents Optimism and Health which are the key principles based in the work we do. These are especially important in uncertain times of change and economic challenges. Our project management approach coupled with our exploration of opportunities will align with your vision, your budget, your schedule and the environment. We have assembled an enthusiastic talented team.

We touch one another each day in a profound way. Buildings impact so many lives; the owner, the occupant, the design team, and the community. It is a special privilege to be involved with this process and to be part of the solution.

For me, life is about love and spirituality, it’s about childhood, family and experiences. We all bring a unique perspective to the world - that is what is interesting about design and architecture. It links us together, with our individual uniqueness in a shared experience.

Humanity has only recently gone from living in mostly rural environments to mostly urban areas. Now more than ever we need to make or leave a place for nature in our lives and in our cities.

To me design is a dialog. Great design is a thoughtful conversation between the client and designer / environment and building. This conversation, if respectful and appropriate, creates a product that is purely crafted. With shared concern the design will respect what has been, afford a vision for a better tomorrow, and provide for many years to come. This is what I strive for when working with a client. It is a process of shared passion and conversation.

I believe that great architecture is conceived by revealing the unique character of site, place and culture with an environmental sensibility. It arises from an understanding of the intrinsic forces at work, relationships to nature, and thoughtful analysis of a given site, culminating in a place-appropriate building. We find too often today, that there are many lost spaces with no relationship to anything. The opportunity to create places that people care about is one of the most rewarding aspects of architecture.

What I love about architecture is the opportunity we as architects have to peek into people's day-to-day routines, and assist them in making their lives more effective and more satisfying. We have a responsibility to understand client goals and respond with solutions that balance functionality, respect for one's surroundings and beauty. Through the collaboration between client and project team, the opportunity to create inspired spaces takes hold. I feel priveledged to be a part of this process.

I think of my role as a problem-solver. Whether that is choosing colors for interiors, designing screens to cut down on privacy invasions, or squaring away details with a contractor, I come up with effective and interesting solutions. I got into architecture because I found myself in love with the world around me, and in love with those details that make our environments so beautiful. I love to use the natural world, as well as playfulness, to inform buildings and detailing.

I am inspired to see really well crafted work. Knowing that the individual or team were dedicated and focused in creating this "thing" makes it special. This can be applied to whole buildings, art, music or an athletic accomplishment. Some of the most inspirational accomplishments are also hardest to achieve. That is why they are honored.

I love the fact that as architects we have the power to confront the conditions of our built environment. Architecture should transcend the mundane and encourage design that creates memories, respects the environment, promotes the spontaneity of play, and allows for personal expression and discovery.
